A client whose bill I had given up on came through, so there is some extra cash in the budget.

https://www.yotashop.com/1985-1995-toyota-2-4l-22r-22re-4cyl/

These guys claim they can rebuild and get 160 hp out of a 22R. That would be very fun in my Sunchaser, and would make highway driving a lot better. I just paid off an old credit card like a responsible adult, so it would seem that something involving cars that is senseless and stupid is in order.

I am having unwise automotive urges. I wonder if this is how serial killers feel when the urge to kill comes on, except with engines instead of horrific violence?

The compromise would be to buy the 190cc kit and upgraded shocks for the Vespa, then start tearing it down for the big restore.

But 160 hp Sunchaser.

To make sure you have all the bad ideas on the table at once, anything worth doing on the Thunderbird?

more power in a weekend cruiser is never a bad thing until it’s a bad thing. you’re nowhere near it being a bad thing.

Didn’t the Sunchaser have an oil leak that was going to require major service anyway?

If so having the engine rebuilt while the funds are available just makes sense. Plus, how much more would the higher performance rebuild be than stock? The difference would definitely be less than adding power later.

I say do it. If I recall the engine is getting up there in miles, so why not do a performance upgrade rebuild?

It’s all a matter of justifying it.

“Hey mom, the TDI 'fix' kind of killed the fun of the car, so I need to tune it."

Look. It’s time to go real big.

It’s a 22R. 160HP? Those are rookie numbers. Those are “I put in new rings and probably fucked it up” numbers. Those are not skilled engine builder numbers.

The 22R is a 2.4L, 8v engine . And they’re bragging about 160? That’s just embarrassing for them. Seriously. Especially since the 22RE   was rated at 114HP. Find a real engine shop near you that knows what they’re doing, and put a fuel injection system in that thing.

Is the engine currently original?  If not, go for it.

I got lost on my way to work yesterday and stumbled across the nicest Honda CVCC I’ve ever seen. I want one. I’m looking at them on the internet. I understand poor financial decisions.

I spent $2600 for a transmission rebuild and  $4000 on floor rust repair on my then recently acquired 85 Jaguar. Both before my son’s first birthday.  How’s that?
